A high-performance, sustainable refrigeration system.

We supported the delivery of Tesco’s new regional distribution centre at Aylesford in Kent, a 650,000 sq ft facility comprising dedicated frozen, chilled and ambient storage zones. The power infrastructure provides a resilient 6 MVA supply, complemented by a large rooftop solar PV array that contributes significantly to on-site electrical demand and supports the facility’s BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

The refrigeration systems are based on direct ammonia for the low-temperature areas and ammonia/glycol for the chilled and produce zones, providing a total installed cooling capacity of around 3,500 kW. This includes a 1MW -24°C freezer system plus a 2.5 MW mixed +2°C and +8°C system for chilled and produce storage, with centralised glycol circulation. The plant configuration delivers robust temperature control, high system efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

We were responsible for the full mechanical and electrical building services across the entire cross-dock facility, including HVAC, domestic services, lighting, LV distribution, life-safety and fire protection systems. Our compliance and commissioning teams monitored installation quality, testing and system integration to ensure full operational performance in line with design intent.
